Connecting to ChatGPT
Use your existing ChatGPT subscription to create games on CodeWisp without spending CodeWisp credits. This guide walks you through the three steps to get started.
Prefer not to connect ChatGPT? You can keep building with CodeWisp credits instead. See our general getting-started guide for the credits path.
Step 1 — Sign in or create your CodeWisp account

You need a CodeWisp account before you can connect ChatGPT.
- Sign in or Sign up at codewisp.ai/sign-up (email, Google, or Apple).
- If prompted, finish setup at codewisp.ai/complete-signup — confirm you are 13 or older and accept the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
- Sign in at codewisp.ai/sign-in if you already have an account.

Step 2 — Connect your ChatGPT account
This links your ChatGPT plan to CodeWisp so AI game generation bills to ChatGPT instead of credits.
Before you start
Important
- This is not official OpenAI API access, and CodeWisp is not affiliated with OpenAI.
- You are responsible for following OpenAI's terms for your own ChatGPT account. OpenAI can limit or suspend your ChatGPT account at any time.
- You need a ChatGPT plan that includes Codex access.
Connect
- Open the model picker on the Create page or in the game editor OR open Settings and find ChatGPT connection

- Click Connect ChatGPT.
- Read the disclosure, check "I understand and want to connect my ChatGPT account.", then click Continue.

- Copy the device code shown in the dialog.

- Click Open ChatGPT and enter the code on the Codex device authorization page.

- Return to CodeWisp and wait until you see Connected as …

If authorization fails
- Code expired — close the dialog, click Connect ChatGPT again, and use the new code.
- ChatGPT won't accept the code — in ChatGPT, go to Security settings and make sure device code authorization for Codex is enabled.
- Account already linked — that ChatGPT email is connected to a different CodeWisp account. Disconnect it there first, or use a different ChatGPT account.
- Rate or plan limits — wait and try again, or switch to CodeWisp credits in the model picker.
You're done when: Settings or the model picker shows your ChatGPT account as connected.
Step 3 — Make your first game
- Open the model picker and select ChatGPT Plan. It should show Free — no credits are spent on this path.

- Describe your game in plain English. For example: "A fast one-on-one sword fighting game built around parries and counterattacks with responsive hit feedback and unlockable character colors"

- Submit and wait for the AI to generate your game. You'll land in the editor with a playable preview.

- Once the editor finishes building, it’s time to do your first playtest!

- Keep refining in chat — try prompts like "make the player move faster" or more detailed like "Add up and down motion for the fighters so that they can move across the floor while fighting."

- You can also try using the “Suggested next steps”. Clicking on any of the suggestions will add a prompt to the chat box, which you can modify or send as is.

- There is so much more that you can do, like uploading your own assets or generating new ones directly in the editor via the “Assets” tab

You're done when: you can get ready to publish.

Making your games public requires approval by CodeWisp moderators. In the meantime, you can find them in My Games.

What's next
- Develop Further — if you followed the steps above, you can continue discovering what the editor has to offer and how you can make your games better in 4. How to identify what needs to improve
- Disconnect ChatGPT — anytime from Settings or the model picker; after disconnecting, AI generation uses credits again.
